Pencils have legs in my classroom, as I’m sure they do in most rooms. I have a pencil jar in my room that students are free to borrow pencils from and I ask them to return the pencil at the end of class. Most of the time, the pencils are carried away.
I do not like to get involved with the pencil wars. I don’t want to have to ask every student why they don’t have one or ask for some collateral. I just want them to have one if they need it.
Now that we’ve started a new quarter, I’m having the kids sit in lit circles. There will be 1 person assigned as the “materials collector” or something like that. Each group will have 5 pencils, and they cannot leave until all 5 are back in the group’s materials basket. The materials person will be responsible for having all the pencils accounted for.
HA. This is my solution for now. Hopefully it will work for a while.
