. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the embryo of a zebrafish (Danio rerio), showing its eyes either side of its large open mouth (centre). Zebrafish are freshwater fish that are found in India. They are a model organism often used to study embryonic development and are currently being used for studies into the genetic causes of neurodegeneration. Their eggs are transparent and develop rapidly, which allows observation of the differentiation of the cells into different body organs. As vertebrates, they are more appropriate models for some genetics research than fruit flies and nematode worms. Magnification: x150 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
